Taekwondo as a Parent – Week 5
I’ve been mildly obsessed, over the past couple of weeks, with making sure that my son and I are at a rough parity on practice attendance. The dojang is strict on belt attainment, requiring 30 sessions before being able to test for a belt. I am also being very careful that we need to be advancing at the same time, at least until yellow belt. He’d be insanely displeased if I advanced before him. I‘m aware that adults tend to advance more quickly than small children, so I’m trying to pace myself more slowly.
When we get time here and there, I’m also working with him on the Chon Ji form independently. The form/poomsae and counting to ten are going to be his biggest challenge to advancement, alongside occasionally mixing up his right and left. In eight sessions, he’s done pretty well at the basic stances, strikes, and blocks.
