Some Dan Gun difficulties
I’ve got Dan Gun (second teul form you’re supposed to learn for ITF-style taekwondo) somewhat down.
There is one tricky spot, though…
Between steps 11 and 14 (bottom of the “I” in the right image, you have to do two pivots off your back foot. They’re somewhat tricky, because the direction that you move for each isn’t the same, and the logic is different from that of Chon Ji. Honestly no idea how my son is going to pull it off unless he learns it by rote over and over again. But then again, he picked up Chon Ji without much of an issue (even though he kept trying to rush it once he learned it).
I was originally kind of annoyed with the forms as ceremonial relics, until I realized that the forms give you pieces of what you need to learn at that level.
As a side note, I’ve done a decent amount of reading on sine wave vs non-sine wave movement. Basically, the theory of sine waves is that a certain amount of upward and downward movement adds force to your blows. The result is that your movements end up looking bouncier than they would otherwise. Traditional non-sine wave movements look more straightforward.
It appears that rote repetition is the name of the game here. I drilled the foot movements enough times that I eventually figured it out. Go me.
