The data engineer is the most valuable position in an analytics department, and it’s not even close. It’s also a profoundly expensive role to maintain. On top of that, it’s necessary to keep those employees from jumping ship, because the necessary training to get these employees up to speed is loooooong. On my end, I’ve decided that having that data engineering skillset myself will at-least-partially inoculate my department from a critical vacancy. So, ugh, I’m teaching myself data engineering.
